This city of accolades? Pittsburgh, Pa.

Pittsburgh just celebrated its 250th birthday, but the most important celebrations of its vitality may have come from outsiders, including The New York Times, Forbes and Time. This city on three rivers may often get lumped with Rust Belt towns like Detroit and Cleveland, but analysts perceive its economy as evolved with a resilience more similar to New York’s and Chicago’s. Time dubbed it the “One Economic Bright Spot on Main Street.”

The region’s home prices rose in 2008, unemployment is below the national average and the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl, so Pittsburghers were buoyant even when temperatures dropped below zero. The region learned decades ago how to tough out economic problems when its leading economic engine, the steel industry, collapsed.

Steel companies are still planning billions of dollars of investment in southwestern Pennsylvania, but the biggest economic fields are now health care, education and banking. A bevy of small tech startups are a new source of pride and hope for a region eager to grow.

Despite all the recent good publicity, Pittsburgh was still one of the fastest shrinking U.S. cities in recent years and its government is saddled with debt. The region’s history of parochialism may be part of the problem, according to some legislators who have been pushing for consolidation.

Although the city of Philadelphia was the center of the American Revolution, the citizens of Pittsburgh certain played their own part in the war. After the war, the city of Pittsburgh, which was at that time merely a village, began to grow quite rapidly. After the War of 1812, Americans began to realize that the production of goods at home was important. During the war, Britain had cut off supplies to the United States in an attempt to win the war. This served as a catalyst for growth and production in Pittsburgh, which quickly became a hub for industry and production. This trend for production carried into the early 20th century as Pittsburgh began producing more than 1/3 of all steel produced within the United States.

The third Saturday in May at Washington’s Landing is a large outdoor festival that celebrates just about all that the outdoors has to offer. There are over 100 different groups represented at this wellness festival that includes fishing, kayaking, inline skating and even rock climbing. There are booths located throughout the park to encourage outdoor activities. This is a wellness celebration that is not only informational, but fun.

Pittsburgh Folk Festival

The third weekend in May brings the Pittsburgh Folk Festival to life at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. This event has been going on for 53 years and features everything Folk, including art and music. You can enjoy foods, music and dance as well as exhibits at this annual event that is the pride of Pittsburgh and celebrates folk art and music from over 25 different nationalities.

Memorial Day Polka Festival

Polka enthusiasts will want to visit Pittsburgh for Memorial Day for the annual Memorial Day Polka Festival that takes place at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Saxonburg Fireman’s Carnival

The second weekend in June on Pittsburgh Street is the home to the Saxonburg Fireman’s Carnival. This large carnival features rides, games as well as food and craft vendors that is hosted by the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department. The event starts off with the largest Fireman’s Parade that is east of the Mississippi.
